Alan Karpuch asked:

Football card collecting started as a modest hobby in the beginning with partisans buying tobacco products and chewing gum for the free Football cards that were found inside. Comparable to baseball cards, football cards for the first time appeared in the late 1800’s. Football is the most popular spectator sport in the United States, and accumulating football cards is a love for a lot of football fans. Once you have begun collecting, you will want to learn how to figure out the value of an individual football card.

You can do this by purchasing a price guide or going to ebay.com. These will help you figure out there current values. So as I am sure you already know, amassing football cards for most people is more than just an investment. If you’re, like me, a football card collector, then you must have exhausted a long time looking up player statistics and their records as a child with your collection. There is no better way to follow your favorite players than collecting football cards. There are many ways to collect Cards. Below we will break them down for you.

Vintage Cards

Vintage cards are definitely fun to collect. Vintage cards are normally football cards that were produced before 1960. These cards are very hard to find in good condition but are also very valuable to collect. People that collect vintage cards normally are not just collectors but also investors.

Rookie Cards

Many people enjoy collecting rookie cards. Rookie cards are the first cards of a given player. These cards are also normally the most expensive card of that given player. Many fans enjoy collecting the rookie cards of there favorite players of the past and future. Due to the high demand these cards tend to rise in value much faster than a regular issed card that is not the players rookie.

As you can see card collecting can be a joyful experience that connects you with you favorite team and periods in time that you will always want to remember. It can also be a very profitable experience.

I collected baseball cards from when I was about 6 years old (1968) until the early 80s, when all the middle-aged baby boomers came in with their money, tried to recapture their youths, boomed prices up so you needed to have “expert appraisers” rating the condition of cards to “protect investments” and completely ruined the hobby. Here are my all-time favorite cards, though, most of which I got the old fashioned way: out of wax packs with bubble gum, the rest from shoe boxes at collectors conventions in the days when the biggest baseball card show in New York was held in the basement of a church. For a real baseball flavor, the music is by a hero of my childhood, Denny McLain, at the console of the mighty Hammond Organ from his 1968 LPs “Denny McLain at the Mighty Hammond X-77 Organ: The Detroit Tigers Superstar Swings with Today’s Hits” and “Denny McLain in Las Vegas”. It’s too bad Denny didn’t confine his swinging to the ball field or the console of the Mighty Hammond organ. He’d be in the hall-of-fame today.

Tom A Sullivan asked:

Collecting Baseball Cards is a fun and enjoyable hobby that anyone can start, since it takes very little capital and you are able to interact with other people that share the same interest. Many people start sports card collecting at a young age either because they want to follow their favorite sports player or favorite sports team.

It’s always fun to open a pack of cards and wonder what you’ll find. The rush of finding a valuable card from a pack that you only paid a few dollars for would make anyone’s day.

Many sports card collectors establish their own niche. They either collect cards of one particular athlete, team, or sport. This can pay huge dividends to the sports collector if the athlete outperforms through their sports career. If an athlete is inducted into the Hall of Fame in their respective field, the sports card collector has a chance to turn a 10,000% profit from their initial investment.

Trading card manufacturers have become more sophisticated throughout the years. Originally, these card companies would place a piece of bubblegum in each pack to entice a collector to purchase a pack of cards. Now, sports card companies place special limited edition inserts into certain packs. These inserts, which include signed cards, special redemption cards, and pieces of sports memorabilia, are worth hundreds of dollars in the secondary market because of the limited quantity available.

Businesses then started to create trading card packs called, “Mystery Packs.” These mystery packs were packs with cards from all different types of manufacturers with different caliber of cards. Some cards were worth the minimum, while others were worth hundreds of dollars. What attracts people to these, “Mystery Packs,” is that they have a chance to open a pack of trading cards that has a value worth a couple hundred dollars, while they only paid a few dollars for the pack.

Mystery Packs are more valuable then regular trading card packs because their minimum value will always be equal to or great then the price you paid and the cards are a lot more valuable.
